About Kurie

Kurie is an internationally operating company, registered in Belgium and run by Katuschka Kuipers-van Nuland.

The name Kurie refers to Marie Curie, the famous female physicist who lived from 1867 to 1934. Together with her husband Pierre Curie, Marie Curie studied radioactive materials and discovered the elements polonium and radium. She did extensive research on the properties and (medical) applications of radium, and hence led the way to a new era for medical knowledge and the treatment of diseases. During World War I, Marie set up mobile radiography units, powered using tubes of radon, to help treating injuries at the battlefront.

Marie Curie received many honorary science, medicine and law degrees and honorary memberships of learned societies throughout the world. She became the first woman in France to complete her doctorate, she was the first woman professor at the Sorbonne and in 1903 she was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize (in Physics). Eight years later, she received another Nobel Prize (in Chemistry).

Being a female physicist myself, with a strong interest in the medical applications of physics, I greatly admire Marie Curie and the impressive research she has done. I therefore named my company after her. Writing it with a 'K' (of Katuschka) instead of a 'C', gives it a personal touch....
